Teachers/Professors vs. Self-Taught

Been a while since I have taken lessons on any of my instruments. They want us to believe that being a student of the arts requires guidance from a trained professional but I can only agree with half of that idea.  Yes, it takes some sort of guidance to pick up a new hobby but how does a professor teach us how to be US?
Ok, before I sound like I am bashing all music teachers, let me save myself by stating that I was in school to be music educator before I changed majors and I am currently a brass instructor for Guitar Center in Hallandale, Florida.  It is my job as the instructor to mold my client into the musician that he envisions with the aid of various methods and books. The question I am asking is can someone be a better musician by reading the method book or does he/she need the interpretation of a trained professional?
Before you go on Google to rate you professor check out this list of famous autodidacts. Not everyone can pick up a book and learn something like guitar.  If we could all teach ourselves something new we could save a lot of money but would you be comfortable with a self-taught doctor or architect?
It all depends on how you interpret the info. Some Christians believe that church is needed as long as we read our Bibles but history has proven that anyone can look a Bible verse differently.  Like the Bible, a method book is written to provide guidelines and is most efficient when taught by a Pastor or, in our case, a music teacher.  I believe a true teacher of any kind is one who instills the concepts into their student as well as the confidence to continue their journey alone through self-research.

Physical Fitness and the Music Industry

Today marks day 46 of my P90X3 routine from Beach Body.  It has not been an easy journey but failure is not an option in my quest for better health and physical fitness.  Now, why am I blogging about my fitness routine on a music blog site?  A healthy body will assist in creating the best music possible that’s why!
All of my music students out there will recount every time their professor told them to use their abdominals to assist with air support.  Yes, a six-pack will not make you play better but when you are doing a 4-hour gig and have to sing or play an F6 for 16 counts it kind of helps.  Think about the out of shape percussionist that have to carry a bass drum for an entire parade?  So, am I starting to make any sense so far?  Check out this study on the affects of physical fitness on music performance conducted by researchers.
On the entertainment side of music physical fitness is a huge factor in building a marketable appearance in the industry.  We hear and see music superstars talk about how important it is to “be comfortable in your skin” everyday. The harsh reality is that most executives will turn down an artist just because of the way they look and marketability.  With America taking more steps towards cutting obesity the industry will do their part in putting out artists who they believe will have the biggest influence on the public.

I may not be where I want to be but I am well on my way thanks to Tony Horton and P90X3. If you are interested in joining me on this journey click here and check out what is available for you.  In the meantime stay healthy, be creative, and continue to live the music in a positive light!
