Misplaced Talent in the Industry

Good evening music heads! The past few days gave me some time to reflect on feelings felt from the Frank Ocean performance. As I began to think that maybe I was critiquing Mr. Ocean's talent too harshly my doubts quickly evaporated once I heard him open his mouth for the first time. Today, lets look at something that we all fail to accept as consumers and future businessmen in the art. Why do talented artists think it is okay to explore grounds with their limited gift? As managers why do we believe it will be profitable to force these artists down the throat of their audiences? Why do impressionable fans allow and even encourage this behavior? Furthermore, if it is okay for consumers to allow it, why do other musicians let their peers get away with the act? Lets get down to business, shall we?

Understand One Thing

This blog is not about artists that are relevant without having any sort of talent. My problem is with managers and producers that allow talented individuals to get away with performing music that are not suited for them. Many of today's superstars are famous for creating beautiful music but, in my eyes I believe their songs are tainted by the lack of talent needed to deliver them. Most of these stars start out as songwriters for other artist but, at some point they believe they should try to perform their own music. A few artists such as Ne-Yo, Smoky Robinson, and R. Kelly have made successful  careers from both writing and performing their own  songs. On the other hand, The Dream, Frank Ocean, Drake, and T-Pain have made a mockery of the art by using technology to make them into incredible singers. What is wrong with this picture? Did you know that you can earn more money as the songwriter/owner of a song? Is it necessary to give into greed while setting music culture back? I will not stop at just the songwriters, we need to acknowledge the other singing frauds as well. There have been few singers in the history of the business that could both dance and sing. The likes of Michael Jackson, James Brown, Beyonce, and Chris Brown are, what I call, entertainers. These artist spend their whole lives learning how to do it all including singing, dancing, rapping, and whatever they need to excite their crowd. However, there are some greatly talented dancers that should never have grabbed the mic as well. These performers include Madonna, Ciara, and J-Lo among others. As much as we would like to see them shake their asses on camera I would prefer never to hear them sing a tone on stage.

Why Managers, Why?

You have to ask yourselves the same question every time you hear a horrible live performance, "Who let them get away with that?!" The answer to that would be their managers and higher levels of creative power. Sometimes a great songwriter may have all the credentials to be a star; great lyrics, looks, and stamina.  Unfortunately, these artists don't acquire the performing talent to get their music anywhere. Since no manager wants to repeat the Milli Vanilli catastrophe, many are going with the easier route of relying on auto-tone. The wonders of auto-tone will make you a beloved star and the most hated among other musicians. If you don't believe that managers will do anything to keep fans buying lets remember what happened after the east coast/west coast tragedy. Before Biggie was murdered, his manager Diddy (Puff Daddy at the time) was seen in all of his videos and heard on all of his records. After the loss of Diddy's most prized artist, he was forced to take the spotlight to keep his label a float. Diddy did everything from singing, dancing, and rapping (none of which he was good at) to entertain the crowds. The successful career of Diddy was supported by many fans and unfortunately lead to other aspiring artists to follow in his footsteps.

Why They Get Away With It

Why do these talented, yet confused, artists get away with such a mockery of the arts? The answer to that question is you and I my friends. The music industry is much like any other business and operates on supply and demand. As customers we want good music and beats to dance to all night long and music executives will do what is needed to supply our demand. Although there are music heads like you and I who find this practice a joke, we are outnumbered by incompetent listeners who only care about bumping and grinding. Can we stop and avoid these kind of performers from taking over our radio and televisions? Of course we can but it is highly unlikely that this simple generation will request a higher quality of music right now. In the meantime, let us continue to support our favorite artists who are using their talent the correct way. Also, let us teach our younger generation the differences in all types of music and how to identify bad music. We have to hold these record labels accountable and prevent more performances like Frank Ocean's.

The Grammys! Live Interactive

Here we are music heads!  I hope you all are comfortable on your couches and ready to get this show on the road! Have your laptops ready and your minds open as we begin our live discussion. First, I would like to congratulate all of the REAL musicians who have won their awards back stage before the event even airs.  I have my television tuned in on the TV Guide channel where Randy Jackson as defending his ailing TV show and its "credible" judges.  What do you think of the Grammy Awards Red Carpet so far??? Be sure to leave your comments and observations.

Stay tuned for my next update at the beginning of the show. . .

Okay folks, Taylor Swift opened the show with a mediocre performance so I hope they can do better with their next performing artist.  Thank God for my boy LL Cool J for saving the show with his explanation on why the Grammys are so important in music. Whoever made the set list for this show should be considered for termination due to the fact that I have yet to see the crowd pumped for this event.

Next update in 30 minutes!

Congratulations to Adele for earning her seventh Grammy for Pop Solo Performance!  Honestly, if anyone else were to win that category I was prepared to call for a riot.  The question that I must ask is why is everyone pushing the line for this dress code? Now lets look at Fun.'s horrible performance for a minute.  It seems to me that we all love to use auto-tone for the records and grand sets on stage to hide the lack of talent from these artist.  You can not tell me that you expected the lead singer of Fun. to blow us all away with that voice did you?

As for John Mayer and this country performance. . . . I am not a huge critique for fashion but John Mayer, come on man! Looks like someone took an old Barney costume and made his tuxedo with it.  I am not a fan of country because it is not as entertaining to me but I have to give Miranda Lanbert credit for giving a very talent-filled performance.  Have you noticed that she was the only artist to receive a standing ovation so far?

Back in 30!

Hell yes! I am so happy to see Justin Timberlake is back and blacker than ever.  Not only did he have a live band but he was able to pull off a live orchestra as well.  Kudos to possibly the greatest performance of the night.  As much as I hate to say it, congratulation to Frank Ocean for his Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album (best singing nigga album).  Did anyone notice how upset Chris Brown was to lose to the man that he jumped earlier this month?  Did anybody notice Miguel's reaction to his second loss of the night?  How do you feel of the events so far?

See you in 30!

If I have to hear Alicia Keys' "Girl On Fire" I am going to jump into a flaming pit of tires and run out singing my best version of "Man On Fire."  Okay, maybe I am going a little too far on this one but she has way too much talent to be putting out such boring music.  Congrats to various artist on their awards and I feel for those that had to perform after Justin Timberlake.  Okay, let me take a moment of silence for all of music as I have just realized that Rihanna has won seven Grammys. This performance is a little dry and I don't know why people are blowing Rihanna up like this. Here is a tip from E Wills Music to all my up and coming artist:

NEVER FEATURE SOMEONE IN YOUR PERFORMANCE THAT CAN SING BETTER THAN YOU. . .

Wait a minute, did "No Church in the Wild" just win over John Legend and Nas?  Ok I have to go before I break this computer. Look out for the Bob Marley tribute and Justin Timberlake's return to the stage!

Back in 30!

Why is Drake so upset during the Bob Marley tribute?  Great performance from all of the artist involved.  Did not expect Sting to appear with his guitar and do that duet with Bruno Mars.  Good to see the sons of Marley on stage paying tribute to their legend of a father but, where are the other 48 of the Marley clan?  This performance has inspired me to be on stage right now so I have to ask if this topped Justin Timberlake's earlier performance?  Congrats to all of the winners so far and I am not looking forward to see Frank Ocean perform live so I can what the big deal is.  I'm expecting him to be exposed for his lack of on-stage talent.  He may be a hell of a song writer but some writers need to stop using auto-tone to make them into stars.

Almost Over!

I am so excited for Gotye for winning Song of the Year! Great music needs to be recognized and publicized to the world. Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson are making the Idol creators proud with their awards and longevity in the business.  Both had incredible performances tonight and I look forward to seeing them again next year. Did any of you, music heads, take notice to Jack White's performance?  I find it odd that he did a mellow performance with all female musicians and then rocked out with all males.  So are you telling the audience that women can't stand toe to toe with male musicians?  It was great to see Kenny Garrett perform Take 5 during the jazz tribute. I believe that was a good way to sprinkle a little class on the awards show.

Final Thought

Okay music heads, I have met my time limit and now it is time for me to watch The Walking Dead (don't judge me).  Congratulations to all of the winners tonight and their performances for the evening.  Make sure you watch Frank Ocean's performance and let me know how you feel about it!

OH HELL NO

Now you know that there is no way in hell I would miss Frank Ocean's performance!  I am not surprised at Frank Ocean's performance tonight.  I am more upset with the fact that people are all over facebook and twitter demanding respect for this man. There are some performances that I have came across in my career that makes me want to reevaluate why I do what I do and that was one of them.  I can easily name below average performers that I attended college with that could have done a better job than what I have just witnessed.  I will be the first to say that he has a very creative mind and the industry needs that but, did the industry really give him all that hype because of his talent or his sexuality?  Wake up people we need to demand better talent to be put out on these streets! I believe I know what our next topic will be. . . .

Upcoming Grammy Awards

Good Friday music heads! We are officially two days away from the Grammy Awards Ceremony and I can't decide if I'm excited or not. When I think about the past year in popular music I am hesitant to declare it as a year of musical progress. 2012 showed us the full potential of raising stars such as Bruno Mars and others but, we also witness the arrival of incompetent new artist like 2 Chainz. Today, lets preview the Grammys as well as introduce an interactive way of communication for Sunday's event.

2012: Music in Review

2012 saw a rise of musical intelligence in all genres of music except for hip hop and r&b. Before you send hip hop goons after me, please give me a moment to explain this bold statement. Compared to other genres, urban music has failed to keep up with the advertising of its newest artist and their music. To put this in simpler words, urban culture takes longer to recognize new records than the rest of pop culture. Take the time to turn on your radio and listen to a local pop station and then a hip hop station. Have you noticed that the pop station is playing a more current variety of music compared to the hip hop station? It's almost as if the industry wants to force certain songs in your head (dumbing you in the process) so you will continue to buy the record that has about five other tracks that sound exactly the same. Don't get me wrong, this year saw a slew of new and talented artists such as Fun., Gotye, The Weeknd, and Kendrick Lamar but they were all covered up by bullshit artist like 2 Chainz and Chief Keef. 2012 also saw the growth of many artists through their music as well as the return of other beloved artists. The closes thing to a musical revolution that I have witnessed last year is the ever changing genre of jazz. New groundbreaking albums from innovative musicians such as Christian Scott caused the industry to take notice of the cries for change that jazz is long overdue for.

Look at the Nominees

The list of Grammy Nominees shows us the state of pop culture and where it has been in the past year. Although I am not a big fan of auto-toned vocals I expect a big night for the pop group Fun. Am I the only one with a problem with Frank Ocean getting multiple nominations? If not for his admittance to being bisexual I don't believe he would have been as relevant. Lets be real, music reflects culture and people will always buy records from artists that they can identify with. I am happy with Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Swift for their Grammy nods but I am a little disappointed for the lack of representation in major categories from black artist this year. Also, must respect goes out to Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen for making successful comebacks with their nominations.

Grammy Expectations

The only expectation of the Grammys this year is to see controversy over their new dress code for the red carpet. Although I believe in the artist being able to comfortably express themselves I am also not in the mood to see booty dimples and sagging breast on my screen. Hopefully artist such as Lady Gaga won't try to make a political statement and set a goal on fire during the red carpet event. Performances should be a little more than average due to the fact that Justin Timberlake will be performing live for the first time in almost ten years. Unfortunately, the biggest hurdle that the event will face this year are the millions of viewers they will be losing to the season premier of The Walking Dead during that time. Sad to admit it but I will also be flipping my channel between the two programs Sunday night.

Interact Live with E Wills Music!

Make sure to have your laptop or mobile device by your side during the Grammys for live interaction. I will post at the beginning of the show and will continue to recap every 30 minutes allowing us to comment and discuss events as they occur live! Be sure to catch the Grammys on CBS Sunday at 8/7c.

Super Bowl Halftime is Gametime: Part II

Ok back to business today as we finally discuss out thoughts on Beyonce's electric performance at halftime Sunday. I must admit that this was one o the more entertaining performances I have seen in a while. Major props are given to the men and women to played their part in making this show spectacular because, would Beyonce really have entertained the crowd on her talent alone?

Is It What We've Expected?

This show was exactly what it should've been. It was a very entertaining show and after it was all said and done Beyonce left the stage with the audience overwhelmed with excitement. In the previous blog, I said that we should expect to see a milder side of Bey on stage with some steamy moments. Now come on, you know that Beyonce and Destiny's Child has put a lot more "sexy" into their shows than they did Sunday night. As all the dance moves were used to simply wow the crowd, the only portion of the show that made me hold my breath was when Beyonce took off some of her clothing at the beginning at the set (was I the only one hoping for a wardrobe malfunction part 2?). One more thing, Beyonce sang her ass off with her real voice!

After Show Buzz

During the second half of the game, I spent some time reading reactions on social networks. Before the power outage in the third quarter (conspiracy) I read many tweets from fans that read, "That performance gave me life," and "I'm so inspired." Have we truly gotten away with so many bad performers that society has forgotten what a real show is? Honestly, though Beyonce did show out on stage Sunday, I can not say that her performance was the "best ever" and totally ignore some of the greats who put on shows like that day in and day out. Once the power went out in the stadium I read all the comments from people saying, "Beyonce's performance knocked out the power," and "Illuminati has a hand in this." Ok I, for one, do believe to some extent in the illuminati propaganda but, this is starting to get out of hand. Let's get this straight, light technicians and engineers spend years and years calculating for an event as big as the Super Bowl Halftime Show. They know every little detail involved within the systems, and I doubt the stress of the performance would have been enough to cause a shortage.

Final Thought

Ok, I am tired of talking and hearing about Beyonce's life day in and day out and I believe that you are too. Overall, the halftime show lived up to all of the hype with a great performance from a true professional in the game. Also, congrats to Kelly and Michelle for show up and taking the fans back in time. An even bigger shout out to Michelle for making it through the show without any trips, falls, shakes, or lost of lyrics. Next post we will discuss the upcoming Grammys and an exciting idea that was given to me that I believe you all will like!

Super Bowl Overview

Hey readers! Last night's game was definitely a night to remember. The "historic" game was filled with record breaking moments, surprises, and excitement.  Okay, I can not go on any more about how good the game was.  Don't get me wrong, the game was definitely something special but as I watched in the 4th quarter I couldn't help but pay attention to this overwhelming feeling I had in my stomach.  Has anyone noticed that the past few years has produced picture perfect Super Bowl games that went down in history?  How come the past couple Super Bowls has ended so dramatically with close scores?  I know that I promised to speak on the Halftime Show and I will get to that later this week but, I would like for you to think about a few things I noticed last night.

Fixed Games???

Yeah, I just asked the golden question.  Do you believe that last night's game and the past Super Bowls were fixed for ratings and advertisement?  While that question marinates in your mind I want you to think about everything that is at stake during the most watched program of the year.

  • Television Ads

This year companies paid a breath taking $4,000,000 to advertise their products for just 30 seconds. Do you understand how crazy this sounds?  Not only do you have to pay the NFL Association money to advertise but you also have to have enough money to produce such a high quality video presentation for millions of potential customers! If I was CEO of Pepsi I would want the NFL to GUARANTEE over a certain number of people to watch my commercial if I was paying that amount. As commissioner of the NFL, I would do whatever I can to keep viewers watching throughout the entire game for the purpose of watching these ads. Check out the ratings from last light's game.

  • Football Records

Last night I saw a few records broken that left me scratching me head.  How in the hell do you allow a man to return a kick-off right up the middle through so many defenders from deep in the end zone? When Jacoby Jones ran for the record breaking touchdown he created a frenzy in the stands and around the country but, do you really think something like that would have happened in a regular season game?  With so many focused players participating in the biggest game of their lives do you really think there is no coincidence that this embarrassing play would take place during that game? I believe it was a fixed play to stir up some excitement for those that may have gotten tired or bored during the game.  As long as I have been watching football, I have never made it through a whole game unless it was my team that was winning.

  • "Comeback Kids"
Look at the scores of all the Super Bowls over the years.  What ever happened to teams completely destroying their opponents in battle? It looks like last night should have belonged to the Ravens. Yes, I am aware that the Ravens did win after all but, there should have been no contest to the powerhouse team.  You mean to tell me that a 34 minute power outage isn't the cause of the 49ers surge in the second half?  Ray Charles could see from inside his coffin that there was something fishy with the events that unfolded after halftime.

  • Personal Side Stories
What were the odds of those coaches facing each other at the Super Bowl of all games? I didn't have to watch the NFC championship to believe that the 49ers' victory was handed to them. If I wanted to add extra hype to the Super Bowl I would definitely worked the playoffs for those two brothers to face each other. The most recent Super Bowls have always had some gripping story that made you want to watch and root for the hero.  In 2008, we all rooted for Eli Manning to prove to the world that he was not living under his older brother's, Payton, shadow.  The previous year, we saw history take place as not only did a black coach win the Super Bowl but, two black coaches went head to head. Last year's Super Bowl brought a rematch that made us all wonder if the Patriots could redeem themselves for their loss against the Giants four years prior.  This year gave us a chance to witness Ray Lewis retire as a champion.  Consider this, if Dan Marino had played in his prime today, do you believe he would have gotten a Super Bowl ring?

So with all this said, have you thought about your answer to my question?  Do you think last night's game and past games have been fixed in some way? I, without a shadow of a doubt, believe that there is something fishy going on in all of sports now a days. Can you blame greedy businessmen for doing all that they can to make money in this economy?

Think about everything that goes on behind the scenes and do not get sucked into the extreme commercialism that surrounds this game every year.  Its a little sad when you think about the men who work so hard to make a living doing what they love to do but are told to hold back their talents in order to make the games more "interesting." Does this mean that professional football players sell their soul to the very same "Devil" that pop stars do in order to achieve money and fame?  Hmm. . . .

Super Bowl Halftime is Gametime!

Welcome back music lovers! Today's post is to prepare you all for the upcoming Super Bowl halftime event. I would also like to put some thoughts in your heads as you watch Beyonce and others light up the arena. The media has been running wild in the past month over this spectacle so lets see, what is really driving every one crazy?

What's the Big Deal?

What is the big deal you ask? It's quite simple, this event will be the first major performance from Beyonce since the birth of her child, Blue Ivy Carter. This will also be the first headlining performance from an African American female artist at the Super Bowl since Janet Jackson and the infamous "wardrobe malfunction" nearly a decade ago. Interesting enough, the media has spent most of their energy feeding into the buzz over whether or not Beyonce can sing (as if her career hasn't proved that already). Hopefully, her recent performance of the National Anthem at the Super Bowl press conference will answer that question:

Black Women at the Super Bowl

Of course I can not post a blog without giving you some sort of a history lesson so lets take the time to look at all the African American female artist who entertained the crowds at the Super Bowl.  The grandest and classiest of them all, Ella Fitzgerald, performed at the Super Bowl in 1972. Fitzgerald was the first on a very short list of black performers who graced the stage within the first 25 years of the event.  There would not be another black recording artist to perform until 1990 when soul legend Irma Thomas took to the stage with other various artists.  Throughout the 90's the NFL association would invite a few more popular black female artists to entertain their audiences both at the event and looking from television. These artist included:

Pattie Labelle - 1995
Diana Ross - 1996
Martha Reeves - 1999
Queen Latifah  - 1999
Chaka Khan - 1999

The 2000's was a decade filled with cultural change and controversy for the halftime event.  Toni Braxton brought a more modernized show when she entertained the masses live in 2000.  Mary J. Blige then took part in the finale of Aerosmith's "Walk this Way" in a 2001 halftime that included other major artists.  2004 was the year Janet Jackson excited the crowd for all the wrong reasons and caused major changes in the broadcastin of future Super Bowls thereafter.  Nicki Minaj was the first black female since Ms. Jackson to be seen at a halftime show when she teamed up with M.I.A. to assist Madonna at last year's event. Beyonce will add to the elite list of talented, African American, female artists at the Super Bowl event this Sunday. Click here for the full list of all time Super Bowl performances.

What to Expect

If you have not already seen the leaked set list of Beyonce's upcoming show here it is. My personal expectation is that even though Beyonce is seen as a major sex symbol, (who got knocked up) the NFL and television network will not be ready to completely let go of what happened years ago. Expect to see a milder "bubble-gum" image from Beyonce and Destiny's Child with a few "steamy" moments on-stage.

Final Thought

Regardless of whether or not Beyonce will be lip-syncing or showing a boob or two one thing that can be promised by the superstar is an incredibly exciting show. After it is all said and done Beyonce will leave everything she has on that stage for the audience to remember and for critics to discuss. Make sure you find yourself right back on my page Monday the day after the Super Bowl for my thoughts and your comments on the game and halftime show. There will be no post on Sunday. So get your chips and beers and have fun this weekend!
